STORYLINE:
Palestinian gunmen killed three people when they opened fire on a vehicle in the occupied West Bank, where Israel has been carrying out large-scale military raids in recent days, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service confirmed the casualties.

The attack came just hours after Israel said it had recovered the bodies of six hostages in Gaza.

One of these hostages was a young Israeli-American man who became one of the most well-known captives held by Hamas as his parents met with world leaders and pressed for his release, including at the Democratic convention last month.

The military said all six had been killed shortly before the arrival of Israeli forces trying to rescue them.

Their recovery sparked calls for mass protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom many families of hostages and much of the wider Israeli public blame for failing to bring them back alive in a deal with Hamas to end the 10-month-old war.

Negotiations over such a deal have dragged on for months.

The Israeli military struck the West Bank city of Jenin on Friday, the third day of heavy fighting in the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military said it struck Palestinian militants and killed a senior Hamas commander in the city.

Such airstrikes, while common over the months-long Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, have been rare in the West Bank in the time since.

Israel says the raids across the northern West Bank — which have killed at least 20 people, mostly militants, since late Tuesday — are aimed at preventing attacks.

The Palestinians see them as a widening of the war in Gaza and an effort to perpetuate Israel’s decades-long military rule over the territory.

The latest Israeli military operation in the northern West Bank was the largest and the deadliest since the war began.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 663 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since then.
