Munich Israeli consulate shooting: What we know so far | DW News

Police in Munich shot a man who had fired on them with a rifle in the vicinity of the Israeli Consulate and a Nazi-era museum in the city. He later died. Police said he was an 18-year-old with Austrian citizenship.

Police in Munich reported a large operation in the city center near the Israeli Consulate, saying officers had shot and hit a suspicious individual, early on Thursday.

"Police officers fired shots at a suspicious person in the area of Karolinenplatz, the person was struck in this process," police said. "A wide area around the operation is sealed off."

The incident came as the Israeli consulate was closed due to the 52nd anniversary of the 1972 Munich Massacre, when 11 Israeli athletes were murdered in the city by a Palestinian terrorist group.
