"Ladies and gentlemen, this terrible attack in Solingen requires tough measures. Yesterday, the federal government therefore presented a package of measures, a security package, on how we want to respond. In my view, in our view, in the view of the Federal Government, a number of measures are necessary in various areas where we will react harshly to this attack."

8. SOUNDBITE (German) Nancy Faeser, German Interior Minister:
"You have seen that we have enforced the law and deported criminals back to Afghanistan. In my view, this is necessary to maintain trust in the rule of law. And I am glad that we were able to do this with partners. Germany had no direct contact with Afghanistan or the Taliban. But we were able to realise this with partners. I am very grateful for that."

11. SOUNDBITE (German) Nancy Faeser, German Interior Minister:
"We will continue to talk to partners because we have said that we are not talking directly to the Taliban. In this respect, we will continue in the same spirit as today. But I also ask for your understanding. We have to conduct very sensitive talks there. That is why I will not go into details. What you mentioned about possible money handouts (she is referring to reports that all deported people have been handed 1,000 euros/1,100 US dollars), that is a matter for the federal states. That’s why I’ll refer you to them again. Why do countries do this? This is a common procedure to establish legal certainty so that one is not overturned by the courts."

STORYLINE:
Germany’s interior minister on Friday said the deportation of 28 Afghan nationals to their homeland, for the first time since August 2021 when the Taliban returned to power, was "necessary to maintain trust."

Nancy Faeser added that "Germany had no direct contact with Afghanistan or the Taliban."

The German government described the 28 Afghan nationals as convicted criminals, but did not clarify their offenses.

German news agency dpa reported, citing information from the federal states involved in the deportations, that the offenses included rape, serious arson and manslaughter.

However, Amnesty International in Germany blasted the Afghans’ deportations, saying the German government bowed to political pressure during an election campaign.

Berlin does not have diplomatic relations with the Taliban, requiring the government to work through other channels. It’s unlikely that Friday’s actions will lead to a wider thawing of relations between Germany and the Taliban, especially after last week’s issuing of the first set of laws to prevent vice and promote virtue in Afghanistan. They include a requirement for a woman to conceal her face, body and voice outside the home.

While the German government said the deportations have been in the works for months, they occurred a week after a deadly knife attack in the town of Solingen in which the suspect is a Syrian citizen who had applied for asylum in Germany.
