STORYLINE:
Russian journalist Sergey Karelin will remain behind bars after a Moscow court extended his pre-trial detention.

Karelin, who has worked for a number of western media outlets, including The Associated Press, is being held on “extremism” charges and is accused of working for the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

The state accuses Karelin of producing content for a YouTube channel run by Navalny’s outlawed Foundation for Fighting Corruption.

The journalist has denied the charges and he faces a minimum of two years in prison and a maximum of six years for alleged “participation in an extremist organization,” according to Russian courts.

Karelin was arrested in April of this year around the same time as other media workers after Navalny’s organization was recognized as ‘extremist’ by Moscow.
