"Today’s verdict should send a message. And that message is a clear message that any attempts to silence the media, or to silence or intimidate a journalist, will not be tolerated. That’s what occurred in this case. That’s what occurred, and that’s why today justice was served."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney:
"There was a lot of evidence in this case. There was a lot of video evidence. Some of their questions – they wanted an additional laptop. They wanted to look at some more of the video evidence, so I want to commend this jury. I think they took a lot of time to review this evidence. This is an important verdict. They gave the defendant, in this case, the – what he has the right to, which is an examination of that evidence. At the end of the day, the jury did the right thing and came back with first degree with use of a deadly weapon."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney:
"We have decided to file the death penalty in a number of cases, and we have decided not to file in the number of cases. Every case has its unique facts and circumstances: the background of the accused person, the gravity of the offense, the nature and circumstances. But the decision was made in this case not to seek the death penalty. But I’m confident that whatever sentence is rendered, that’s a chunk of prison time that Mr. Telles will have to serve."

STORYLINE:
A jury in Nevada has found a Democratic former Las Vegas-area politician guilty of murder in the killing of an investigative journalist who wrote articles critical of his conduct in elected office.

Jurors deliberated for nearly 12 hours after hearing eight days of evidence in his trial, which began Aug 12.

A penalty phase now begins to decide if Robert Telles faces life in prison. He’s been in jail since his arrest several days after Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was found dead outside his home in September 2022.

Prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence against Telles, including DNA tying him to German’s killing. Telles denied killing German. He alleged a broad conspiracy of people framed him for German’s killing in retaliation for his effort to root out corruption he saw in his office.

Telles faces life in prison without parole, life with parole eligibility at 20 years, or 20 to 50 years in prison.
