“During the US-China meeting today, the Taiwan problem was of course discussed. General Zhang Youxia reiterated that the Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests, and the bedrock of China-US relations, and it’s the very first red line that must never be crossed in China-US relations. China will continue to strive for peaceful reunification and is committed to peace across the Taiwan strait, but Taiwan’s independence separatist forces are irreconcilable with peace across the Taiwan strait, like water and fire. “China has indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and the adjacent waters, including the Sabina Shoal. Since its intrusion this April, the Philippines ship 9701 has illegally anchored in the lagoon of Sabina Shoal. Such an act seriously violates China’s sovereignty, breaches international law, and the stipulations of the declaration of the conduct of parties in the South China Sea, and undermines regional peace and stability. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to such activities, and has lodged solemn representations multiple times. Seeking a permanent presence at Sabina Shoal is no different than opening a Pandora’s box, which has aroused strong opposition from regional countries.”

“No country surpasses the US in stirring up trouble and disrupting peace and stability in the South China Sea. The US support and endorsement has emboldened the Philippines side in making reckless provocations time and time again. Intimidating China with the mutual defense treaty will never work. On the contrary, it will only result in stronger indignation and greater morale among the Chinese people.”

STORYLINE:
The Chinese Ministry of Defense said a top Chinese military officer told White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan that the U.S. must stop “collusion” with Taiwan, the self-governing island that China says must come under its rule, during a rare meeting on Thursday.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Col. Wu Qian on Thursday told reporters at a monthly briefing that Gen. Zhang Youxia, one of two vice chairs of the Central Military Commission, told White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan that promoting what China calls the reunification of Taiwan with the mainland is “the mission and responsibility” of the military.
“China has indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and the adjacent waters, including the Sabina Shoal,” Wu said.
