"The Israeli military has rescued another hostage from captivity in the Gaza strip. The army isn’t saying much about this operation, it only says that the 52-year-old man was found in a tunnel in southern Gaza in what it says was a very complicated operation. The man has been identified as Qaid Farhan Alkadi. He’s a member of Israel’s Bedouin Arab minority. He was working as a security guard last October 7, when he was abducted with roughly 250 other people. His rescue has lifted spirits in a country that is weary after nearly 11 months of war. It also could put some pressure on Hamas during ongoing cease-fire talks. Alkadi is the eight hostage to be rescued by Israeli forces but Israel says that over 100 others remain in captivity. It estimates that at least a third of them have died and it fears that that number could continue to rise. Alkadi spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after his rescue from his hospital bed. He thanked the Israeli leader for rescuing him, but he also reminded him that many others remain behind captivity."

STORYLINE:
The Israeli military said it has rescued a hostage who was among scores of people abducted in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, AP’s Joe Federman explains.

The military said on Tuesday that Qaid Farhan Alkadi, 52, was rescued “in a complex operation in the southern Gaza Strip.”

Hamas-led militants abucted about 250 people in the Oct. 7 attack, in which around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, who don’t say how many of them were fighters.

The offensive has displaced 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people from their homes and caused heavy destruction across the besieged territory.

Hamas is still holding around 110 hostages, about a third of whom are believed to be dead.

Most of the rest were released in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel during a cease-fire last November.
