STORYLINE:
French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday.
The two presidents will have a working lunch before attending the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games later in the day.
Steinmeier has been Germany’s president, which is a largely ceremonial role but carries moral authority, since 2017.
Before that, he served twice as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign minister and was chief of staff to her predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder.
