“People don’t come. They want the sky, the sea breeze, clean water. A clean beach too. And then the smoke gets in the way of everything, right? Because it breaks the atmosphere of a beach. A nice beach to enjoy in the morning, afternoon and evening, right? You can’t see the nature, the smoke is in the way.”

STORYLINE:
Wildfire smoke covered the Amazon city of Manaus on Tuesday, further worsening a critical environmental situation in the Brazilian region, which is already suffering from the drying up of its rivers.
Air quality was recorded as very poor in most of the city, according to the Electronic Environmental Surveillance System.
The region has experienced the highest number of fires in almost two decades, around 25,000 for the January to July period, according to official monitoring.
In the Amazon, fires are mostly man-made and used to manage pasture and clear a deforested area.
In recent days, a “wave” of smoke has moved through various parts of the country.
Last week the fires have raged in the state of Sao Paulo, where 42 cities were put on high alert.
The smoke also reached Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, canceling events and closing the airport.
Researchers says that changes in climatic conditions are the main reason the smoke reached regions like Sao Paulo and Brasilia.
