2. SOUNDBITE (English) Alberto Barbera, artistic director – on the 81st edition:
"We never choose a film only by the name of the talents that are in it, of course. We chose on the basis of the quality of the film itself. But this year we were lucky to to have a choice of great films with great casts. And all the talents, they were really very eager to come back to Venice or to come to Venice for the first time, after the long strike of last year, that, that it was a problem for everybody. So, this year we have the longest list of talents, and that would be the most crowded red carpets in years."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Alberto Barbera, artistic director – on small production movies:
"And I think the big films can help the smaller film to get some of the attention and the light from the presence of all the media coming, gathering in Venice for the festival. So, I don’t think that small, independent production will suffer from the competition of the big names. On the contrary, sometimes it happens that they win the major prizes against the big names. So we’re not sure, it’s a fair competition."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Alberto Barbera, artistic director – on Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt:
"We were pretty careful to avoid that they could meet in Venice. So Angelina will be here on Thursday and then she will leave on Friday morning and Brad will come Friday night or Saturday morning for the screening on Sunday, so that there is no chance that they can meet."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Alberto Barbera, artistic director – on Oscar buzz:
"I would be surprised if ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ won’t run for the Oscar again. Same thing for Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ because the performance, for example, of Daniel Craig, absolutely outstanding. The Pedro Almodóvar’s it’s a wonderful movie. Pablo Larraín made a great, great film again. So, and then there is always some surprises. So we’ll see."

STORYLINE:
The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival is about to begin, with major Hollywood films and stars expected in Italy. The festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera teases that this will be the busiest year yet, especially after the last edition took place amid the Hollywood actors strikes, leaving the red carpets more muted than usual.
"All the talents, they were really very eager to come back to Venice or to come to Venice for the first time, after the long strike of last year," says Barbera. "So, this year we have the longest list of talents, and that would be the most crowded red carpets in years."
The private water taxis are going to be packed with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Craig, Tilda Swinton, Jude Law, Julianne Moore, Kevin Costner and Joaquin Phoenix are just a few of names expected to grace the festival this week.
Among the biggest titles in competition there will be Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas film “Maria,” starring Jolie, while "Wolfs," with Pitt and Clooney will premiere at the festival the same week, out of competition.
The pair are legally single but are still fighting legally over issues like custody, finances and a winery in France. And the festival has taken care to schedule their films (and arrival/departures) days apart to avoid any overlap.
