STORYLINE:
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described on Tuesday a French judge’s decision to extend police custody for Telegram’s CEO as "very serious."
Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram, was arrested in Paris over the weekend over allegations that his platform is being used for illicit activity such as drug trafficking and the distribution of child sexual abuse images.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that Durov’s arrest wasn’t a political move but part of an independent investigation.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday stressed that the "serious" allegations against Durov “require evidence that is just as serious,” otherwise the case against him will be viewed as a political move, contrary to what Macron said Monday.
“Otherwise, we are witnessing a direct attempt to restrict freedom of communication and, one might even say, direct intimidation of the head of a large company,” Peskov told reporters during his daily conference call.
Peskov also expressed hope that Durov had all the necessary opportunities for his legal defense and said that Moscow was prepared to provide assistance and support to the Telegram CEO, given that he is a Russian citizen.
“But the situation is complicated by the fact that he is also a citizen of France," the Kremlin spokesman said.
Russian government officials have expressed outrage at Durov’s detention, with some calling it politically motivated and proof of the West’s double standard on freedom of speech.
He was taken into custody at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in France on Saturday after landing from Azerbaijan.
