3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“Canada’s action ignored the objective facts, disregarded WTO rules and went against the trend of history, which is a typical act of protectionism. It doesn’t only undermine China-Canda trade and economic relations, but also hurts the interest of Canadian companies and consumers. Nor does it help Canada’s green transition process or the global efforts in tackling climate change. China strongly deplores and opposes this.”

“We urge the individuals in the Philippines to face squarely the root cause of the issue, not go further down the wrong path of stirring up trouble and provocations and undermining peace in the region, and stop sticking to the playbook of calling black white.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday denounced Canada’s decision to impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles over what Western governments say are China’s subsidies that give its industry an unfair advantage.

Canada announced the decision after encouragement by U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Cabinet ministers Sunday.

Sullivan is making his first visit to Beijing on Tuesday.

At a daily news briefing on the day, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the move as a “typical act of protectionism.”

“It doesn’t only undermine China-Canda trade and economic relations, but also hurts the interest of Canadian companies and consumers, nor does it help Canada’s green transition process or the global efforts in tackling climate change,” Lin said.

“China urges the Canadian side to respect the objective facts, abide by the WTO rules, immediately correct the wrong practices, and not politicize the economic and trade issues,” Lin added, warning that China would take “necessary measures” to safeguard its rights.

Separately, Lin rebuked the Philippines after the country’s defense chief called China “the biggest disruptor” of peace in Southeast Asia.

“We urge the individuals in the Philippines to face squarely the root cause of the issue, not go further down the wrong path of stirring up trouble and provocations and undermining peace in the region, and stop sticking to the playbook of calling black white,” Lin said.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. called for stronger international censure over its aggression in the South China Sea at an international military conference, a day after China blocked Philippine vessels from delivering food to a Coast Guard ship at the Sabina Shoal.

“China has no intention to break into any country’s air space,” Lin added.
