STORYLINE:
Fifteen-year-old Yazan Harazin, who was severely injured in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, walked with his newly fitted prosthetic limbs in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Monday.
Displaced from his home in Shujaiya, Yazan was one of the first beneficiaries of an initiative by the Jordanian Army’s medical team to help injured Palestinians in Gaza.
"I underwent surgeries, was fitted with prosthetic limbs and started to walk," Yazan said.
He lost his right leg below the knee, left leg above the knee, and his right arm below the elbow.
On Monday, Jordan announced that a medical team from the Jordanian Army Royal Medical Services is ready to head to Gaza.
However, it said the team is still waiting for the procedures to be completed and obtain the necessary approvals to enter the besieged territory.
The Royal Medical Services has partnered with two companies that provide cutting-edge technology, allowing for the fitting of functional prosthetic limbs in just one hour, according to army spokesman Brig. Gen. Mustafa al-Hiyari.
al-Hiyari said that two mobile clinics, fully equipped with the necessary equipment to fit new prosthetic limbs, will join the specialized medical team at the Jordanian military field hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.
"In a later stage, we will expand towards the north. The work will be done through our field hospital in Tal al-Hawa," al-Hiyari said.
They will be documented in electronic medical records for ongoing remote consultations and follow-up care, the team said.
