“On August 25, an official ship of the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, despite China’s firm opposition and repeated warnings, insisted on intruding into the waters near Xianbin Reef (known as Sabina Shoal in English) in China’s Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands in English), and deliberately rammed the Chinese Coast Guard ship enforcing the law in a dangerous manner. The responsibility for the collision between the two ships lies entirely with the Philippines. The Chinese Coast Guard took necessary measures against the Philippine vessel in accordance with domestic and international laws. The Chinese ship’s operations on the ground were professional, restrained and appropriate.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“For some time, the Philippines has frequently sent coast guard ships, official ships, etc. to intrude into the waters near Xianbin Reef in an attempt to deliver supplies to the Philippine coast guard ship that has been anchoring in the lagoon of Xianbin Reef for a long time to seek long-term presence there. The Philippines’ move seriously violated China’s sovereignty, undermined the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), and threatened peace and stability in the South China Sea.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday defended Chinese Coast Guard vessels’ actions against a Philippine ship at the weekend near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea as “professional” and “restrained.”
Chinese coast guard ships fired water cannons and blocked and rammed a Philippine fisheries vessel on Sunday in the high seas off the disputed Sabina Shoal, which has become a new flashpoint in the region.
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the Chinese coast guard took “necessary” action against the Philippine vessel, which ignored warnings and “deliberately rammed” the Chinese ships, leading to a minor collision.
Lin blamed the Philippines for the collision and accused the Philippine side of frequently sending supplies to their ship grounded on the shoal to seek “long-term presence.”
“The Philippines’ move seriously violated China’s sovereignty, undermined the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), and threatened peace and stability in the South China Sea,” Lin said.
“China urges the Philippines to stop its infringement and provocation at once and immediately withdraw the relevant ship,” Lin added, warning that China would take “resolute and effective measures” to defend its rights.
China is rapidly expanding its military and has become increasingly assertive in pursuing its territorial claims in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims virtually in its entirety.
