"Domestic travel is up 9% compared to last year over Labor Day weekend, according to AAA booking data. And the price to travel domestically is down 2%. So we’re paying a little bit less for those rental cars and in some cases for certain flights. International travel, though, that the cost to travel internationally over Labor Day is up 11%, and that means that overall bookings are down a little bit because it’s a little bit more expensive."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Aixa Diaz, AAA spokeswoman:
"Gas prices are down this year compared to last considerably. Last, Labor Day weekend, we were paying more than $3.80, for the national average, and now we’re about $3.37. The price obviously it fluctuates every day, but we’re seeing cheaper gas prices right now, and they’ve been coming down for weeks now. The one thing we watch this time of year is for any potential storms, so a hurricane or tropical storm that affects the Gulf could affect refineries and could bring gas prices up, but right now, we’re not seeing that."

"For those people going on road trips Thursday and Friday, the earlier, the better. You want to avoid being on the roads during those peak rush hour times, especially the afternoon rush. So between 4 and 7 p.m. are the worst times to be on the roads those days."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Aixa Diaz, AAA spokeswoman:
"Leave as early as possible. Before the morning rush is even better. Saturday itself is actually going to be a pretty good day to travel, especially in the afternoon, where that’s when most people will be already settled in their destinations, and then Sunday and Monday coming back again. Avoid those afternoon, hours that any time after 12:01 p.m., that’s when you get a lot of congestion, especially in the major metros."
