In Bangladesh, the interim government has signed a UN treaty to protect against enforced disappearances at the hands of security forces.
Chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus, called it a historic moment. The treaty is seen as a first step to stamping out arbitrary arrests and secret detentions. Human Rights Watch says more than 600 people went missing in Bangladesh during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15 years in power. Many were members of the opposition.
