STORYLINE:
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding new elections and a deal for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Protesters gathered near the Defense Ministry, where they hold a moment of silence for six hostages whose bodies were recovered earlier this week.
Meanwhile, officials including a Hamas delegation gathered for high-level cease-fire talks in neighboring Egypt.
The U.S. delegation led by CIA Director William Burns and White House Middle East adviser Brett McGurk held talks with senior Egyptian officials and then with Egyptian and Qatari mediators, according to a person familiar with the ongoing talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to comment publicly.
"To the negotiation team I said, this is the last chance, you personally can decide whether these hostages will live or die," said Yotam Cohen, the brother of hostage Nimrod, who just turned 20 while in captivity.
"If a hostages deal is not signed there in Cairo, tell the problem, the truth if Netanyahu is sabotaging a deal, tell us the truth, this is the least we deserve," he added.
The Egyptian and Qatari negotiators were expected to meet with Hamas officials on Saturday evening.
Hamas won’t take part directly in Sunday’s talks, but will be briefed by Egypt and Qatar, senior Hamas official Mahmoud Merdawy told the AP.
