STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Shiite Muslims in Lebanon marched on Sunday to mark the Arbaeen – the annual commemoration of the end of the 40-day mourning period over Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein.
Hussein – a central figure in Shiite Islam – became a symbol of resistance during the tumultuous first century of Islam’s history.
This year’s Arbaeen comes as conflict casts a shadow across the Middle East.
Tensions remain high between Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group and Israel that on Sunday exchange heavy fire. Both have been in a bitter conflict since the start of the war in Gaza in October.
Shiite Muslims from all over Lebanon mark Arbaeen by marching towards Baalbek to visit the shrine of Lady Khawla, daughter of Imam Hussein. The event is supported by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah
Hussein’s death exacerbated the schism between Islam’s two main sects, Sunni and Shiite.
However, for many Muslims, that division has now taken a back seat to shared anger and grief over the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza where more than 40,200 have so far been killed.
The Israel-Hamas war broke out following the group’s surprise attack on southern Israel, killing nearly 1200 people and taking 250 others hostage.
"We will defeat them (Israel) all together. We don’t care about anything and we will continue on this path," said Mariam Abdalla, a worshiper observing Arbaeen in Baalbek.
Pilgrims usually flock from all around the world to honor Arbaeen in Karbala, Iraq.
Many view it as a reminder of the unity of the Shiite community through centuries of turmoil.
