STORYLINE:
Millions of Shiite Muslims converge on the Iraqi city of Karbala each year for the pilgrimage of Arbaeen, regarded as one of the largest annual public gatherings in the world.
The festival marks the anniversary of the 40th day of mourning following the seventh-century death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hussein at the hands of the Muslim Umayyad forces in the Battle of Karbala, during the tumultuous first century of Islam’s history.
Shiites regard this occasion as one of the holiest dates on the Shiite religious calendar.
Pilgrims come from various parts of Iraq as well as from Iran, Lebanon and the Gulf countries, with many making their way to Karbala on foot.
Groups of pilgrims beat their heads to express mourning as part of the religious ceremonies, that take place amid tight security.
For Shiite Muslims, the remembrance of Imam Hussein is an emotional event that sees many believers grieve over his killing.
The faithful traditionally walk for a day or longer to reach Karbala where crowds chant and march around the Imam Hussein shrine.
