A judge at the Supreme Court in Brazil threatened to block Internet Service X if owner Elon Musk did not immediately appoint a new legal representative for the company in the country. In an order, Alexandre de Moraes from the Supreme Court gave Musk 24 hours to present a suitable name – otherwise X’s activities in Brazil would be “stopped immediately”.
This escalates a months-long dispute between the judge and the tech billionaire and X owner. Moraes had launched an investigation against Musk in April and accused him of reactivating illegal accounts. Musk then accused the judge of violating freedom of expression and spoke of censorship. He expressed fears that X’s legal representative in Brazil could be arrested.
We talk to Yasmin Curzi, a professor at the FGV Law School in Brazil, about the latest developments.
