STORYLINE:
Friends of Renaldo Thomas paid tribute to him on Thursday at a bar where he socialised in the Caribbean Island of Antigua.
Thomas, known as ‘Rick’ was working as a chef and died after the luxury yacht he worked on sank off Sicily,
His body was recovered Monday where the superyacht Bayesan, owned by the British tech magnate, Mike Lynch, sank during a freak storm .
Thomas was the first confirmed death from the accident. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of his last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told The Associated Press.
Thomas was born in Canada, but he visited his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s.
Best known as ‘Rick’ he started working as a bartender in Jolly Harbor so he could be close to the sea, his second love after cooking, Isaac said.
Friends and patrons gathered at the Skullgerry bar to honor Thomas, where he used to socialize with other harbor workers whenever he was on land.
“He was my boy, my friend – respect’ said Clive Thomas , a boat varnisher painter who knew the chef for 30 years.
The Global Affairs in Canada issued a statement saying that it was aware of the death of a Canadian citizen and was in contact with its diplomatic office and local authorities. "We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event," said the statement.
The Italian coast guard said that the superyacht had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.
Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States.
