3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China firmly opposes any country allowing the Dalai Lama to visit in any name, and firmly opposes government officials from any country meeting the Dalai Lama in any form. China has made solemn protests with the US. The US so-called Special Coordinator for Tibet Issues interferes in China’s internal affairs, which China has never recognized. We urge the US to fully recognize the importance of Tibet-related issues, have a clear understanding of the anti-China and separatist nature of the Dalai Lama group, abide by its commitments on Tibet issues, earnestly respect China’s core interests and major concerns and not allow the Dalai Lama to engage in political separatism within the county.”

“Days ago, Chinese prosecutors indicted a Japanese citizen according to law on suspicion of espionage. As a country governed by the rule of law, China lawfully investigates and handles illegal and criminal activities. At the same time, China protects the legitimate rights and interests of the person concerned and provides convenience for Japanese consular officials to perform their duties in China. We hope Japan will educate and guide its citizens to abide by Chinese laws and regulations and not conduct illegal and criminal activities in China. I would refer to the competent authorities for the specific.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday expressed opposition to U.S. officials hosting the 14th Dalai Lama, who Beijing has accused of seeking to separate Tibet from China.

The 89-year-old exiled Buddhist leader met with Uzra Zeya, the U.S. undersecretary of state for human rights and special coordinator for Tibetan issues, in New York on Wednesday, where the US side reaffirmed its commitment to the human rights of Tibetans.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning condemned the meeting and accused the coordinator of interfering in China’s internal affairs.

“We urge the US to fully recognize the importance of Tibet-related issues, have a clear understanding of the anti-China and separatist nature of the Dalai Lama group,” Mao said.

Beijing doesn’t recognize the Tibetan government-in-exile and hasn’t held any talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama since 2010.

Separately, Mao confirmed the report that a Japanese national has been indicted on suspicion of espionage recently.

The man, an employee of Japan’s Astellas Pharma, was detained in Beijing in March last year for alleged involvement in espionage.

The Japanese Embassy said it was informed of the indictment by Chinese authorities in mid-August and would continue to appeal for his release.

“We hope Japan will educate and guide its citizens to abide by Chinese laws and regulations and not conduct illegal and criminal activities in China,” Mao said, suggesting reporters check with competent authorities for case details.
