STORYLINE:
Israeli strikes over Gaza early Thursday killed at least 16 people, according to hospital officials and Associated Press journalists who counted the bodies.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah received 15 bodies of people killed in strikes over the Maghazi and Nuseirat refugee camps, as well as eastern Deir al-Balah.
Among them are 3 children and a woman.
One child was also killed in the southern city of Khan Younis.
The body was taken to Deir al-Balah as the ambulance did not have access to the seaside road.
At the hospital, people gathered to identify the bodies that were laid out and covered in blankets.
A man held a small body wrapped in a white shroud as per Islamic tradition, while a woman next to him wept saying “my love, my soul” before funeral prayers began.
Another body arrived to the hospital, a middle-aged man laid out on a table brought in by a group of men.
The Israeli offensive launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack has killed over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the local Health Ministry, which does not say how many were militants or civilians.
The devastating military offensive has caused widespread destruction and forced the vast majority of Gaza’s residents to flee their homes, often multiple times.
Hamas and other militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted around 250.
Around 110 hostages are still inside Gaza, a third of whom are believed to be dead.
