STORYLINE:
Waves of Shiite pilgrims from Iran have crossed the Al-Mundheriya border into Iraq, heading towards the holy city of Karbala, south of Iraq’s capital, Baghdad.

Their journey is to mark part of the annual commemoration of Arbaeen — a significant event in Shiite Islam.

The Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of Iran-allied militias, are responsible for managing and securing the crossing of Al-Mundheriya.

Arbaeen, which translates to ‘forty’ in Arabic, commemorates the end of a 40-day mourning period after the death of Imam Hussein, Prophet Mohammed’s grandson.

This pilgrimage represents a profound expression of faith and remembrance for the central figure in Shiite history.

As the faithful make their way through the border into Iraq, their numbers and dedication highlight the deep cultural and spiritual importance of this sacred event.

At the al-Mundheriya border crossing between Iran and the Iraqi province of Diyala, Iraqi officers are checking thousands of pilgrims entering the country.

The border has become a focal point of activity as the annual pilgrimage draws massive crowds.

From Aug. 6 to 17, more than 267,000 Iranian visitors have passed through the crossing into Iraq, according to the Iraqi state news agency.

This significant influx underlines the scale of the pilgrimage and the critical role of the border security in managing the flow of worshippers.

Hundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims from Iraq and around the world are expected to gather in Karbala ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, in what is regarded as one of the world’s largest annual public gatherings.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage draws tens of millions of people each year.
