"The amount of property damage, the road damage, we lost the bridge on the July 10th storm. We lost our whole mountain road on the 27th. So, every time that one of the storms came, they’re hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage."

"Yeah, it’s traumatic. It’s unbelievable the extent that it ripples out. You know, if Kingdom Trails can’t open, people cancel their reservations at the Airbnbs and at the inns. We have restaurants that are counting on all of those people coming here, and it’s just a chain event that just eventually, you know, dwindles where you have these absolutely beautiful days and you just don’t have the people here that we normally would have, if we didn’t have this devastation."

"We were having a really good summer and, when the trails closed down, things came to a bit of a screeching halt, you know. But it … it’s kind of part of the game, I mean, part of the situation with us is every … everything we rely on is weather related, whether it be skiing and, especially, Kingdom Trails."

"It wasn’t just flooding. It was consistent, constant rain for over a month last year. And so we look back at our finances last year and it’s how can we even compare those visitor numbers to what was already a loss to now another loss? And I know Kingdom Charles last year financially, we lost 100 … we took $150,000 loss last year because of that."

STORYLINE:
Two bouts of flooding in July has hampered businesses and destinations in an economically depressed section of northeastern Vermont.
Some businesses are still closed as they continue to repair damage and others are urging visitors, who were deterred by the weather, to make the trip.
Kingdom Trails, a popular destination for mountain bikers in Burke, draws tens of thousands of visitors a year.
But the flooding that washed away roads and bridges and damaged homes and trails has deterred some visitors.
