STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s military on Tuesday conducted a live-fire drill, launching several anti-air missiles in response to growing military pressure from China.
The exercise took place at the Jiupeng Military Base in Pingtung located in southern Taiwan.
Among the missiles launched were Taiwan’s domestically-made Sky Bow III (Tien Kung III) anti-ballistic missiles, U.S.-made Patriot PAC II missiles and U.S.-made standard missile.
The Sky Bow III is a key component of Taiwan’s air defense system, designed to intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles, while the Patriot PAC II serves as a critical element in countering aerial threats, including enemy aircraft and cruise missiles.
This live-fire drill is part of Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense capabilities amid frequent incursions by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China into the airspace and waters surrounding the island.
In recent years, PLA fighter jets and warships have increasingly approached Taiwan, raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The Taiwan Navy and Air Force conduct annual missile drills to ensure the preparedness of their forces.
These drills are crucial for testing the military’s ability to respond to potential threats, as well as for assessing the proficiency of personnel in operating radar systems and missile launch protocols.
As cross-strait relations continue to be strained, Taiwan’s government has emphasized the importance of strengthening its defense capabilities and enhancing cooperation with international partners, particularly the United States, to ensure regional stability.
The live-fire drill at Jiupeng underscores Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in an increasingly challenging security environment.
