STORYLINE:
A legislator in Paraguay was killed Monday during a police raid at his residence in the northern city of Pedro Juan Caballero.
The legislator Eulalio Gomes of the ruling Colorado Party was shot during the early hours of the morning in the town, which Paraguay’s authorities consider a drug trafficking hub located on the border with Brazil.
Emiliano Rolón, Attorney General of Paraguay, described the events as part of a raid to collect evidence in relation to accusations of money laundering and criminal activity against Gomes and his son Alexandre Rodrigues Gomes.
Rolón said a "confrontation" ensued during the raid, resulting in the death of Eduardo Gomes and the arrest of Alexandre Rodrigues Gomes.
Larissa Gomes, daughter of Eulalio Gomes, said one domestic worker witnessed the events.
Oscar Tuma, Gomes” family lawyer, said it was a "procedure carried out at an inappropriate time, in an unnecessary manner, without any justification."
The parliamentarian had already been peppered with accusations that linked him to a network of drug traffickers in Brazil, accusations that Gomes repeatedly denied.
