"We are standing here in front of the ESCWA (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) – which is one of the United Nations organizations – in order to protest against the genocide that is taking place in Gaza and the air raids which are driven against all those innocents, and the demolishing of buildings and the infrastructure, and all the inhuman behavior that the Zionist state is behaving (in)."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohammad Kassem, protester:
"(Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu is also opposing any kind of resolution, especially with the negotiations. And what happened yesterday between (U.S. Secretary of State Antony) Blinken and Netanyahu is a great proof that the Israelis are now using the space of time where the United States is unable to take a decision and (U.S. President Joe) Biden is so weak that he cannot force the Israelis to sign for an agreement to stop (the war) or to cease-fire – and that is why Netanyahu is dragging the leg of the United States for a war."

STORYLINE:
Lebanese and Palestinian protesters rallied in Beirut on Tuesday, demanding an immediate stop to the war in Gaza.

The protesters waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags outside the office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

The protesters include members of labor organizations that support the Palestinian cause.

The war in Gaza has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, and devastated much of the territory.

Protester Mohammad Kassem said he joined the demonstration to voice his rejection of Israel’s offensive in Gaza and the loss of life in the enclave.

Kassem said he believes that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is opposed to "any kind of resolution" in Gaza.

He also criticized U.S. President Joe Biden and America’s position on the war.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting fellow mediators as he pressed ahead Tuesday with the latest diplomatic mission to secure a cease-fire in Gaza, even as Hamas and Israel signaled that challenges remain.

Blinken’s meetings in Egypt and upcoming ones in Qatar come a day after he met in Israel with Netanyahu and said the prime minister had accepted a U.S. proposal to bridge gaps separating Israel and Hamas.

Blinken called on the militant group to do the same.

But there still appear to be wide gaps between the two sides, including Israel’s demand for lasting control over strategic corridors in Gaza, which Hamas has rejected.

Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack killed about 1,200 people and triggered the ongoing war.

Hamas-led militants breached Israel’s defenses on that day and took around 250 hostages.

Over 100 hostages were released in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel during a weeklong cease-fire in November last year.
