STORYLINE:
Hundreds of protesters marched in Port-au-Prince Monday to demand security after the latest bout of gang violence.
Police used tear gas against protesters as they marched in the capital and set up barricades with burning tires.
The residents of the hillside neighborhood of Solino called for a demonstration after recent gangs attempted to take over the area.
The gangs sought to gain a strategic position to control an important route in the city, including the road leading to Port-au-Prince’s international airport.
Despite promises to prioritize security by the recently appointed Prime Minister, Garry Conille, and the arrival of around 400 police officers from Kenya to support the national police, gangs continue to control 80% of the country’s capital.
Local media reported that the attacks on Solino were carried out by the combined forces of gangs led by notorious gang leaders Jimmy Chérizier, also known as "Barbecue," and Kempes Sanon, a convicted kidnapper who escaped from prison in 2021.
Gangs have been encroaching on Solino since last year, forcing many residents to flee their homes.
About 165,000 Haitians fled their homes due to a surge in gang violence this past February, leaving them with nowhere to turn in the capital city, which is home to nearly 3 million people.
There have been no official reports of deaths or injuries in the latest attack.
