++The Associated Press is adhering to Iranian law that stipulates all media are banned from providing BBC Persian, VOA Persian, Manoto TV and Iran International any coverage from Iran, and under this law if any media violate this ban the Iranian authorities can immediately shut down that organisation in Tehran.++

"Regarding punishment for the aggressor against the Iranian territory, the Iranian government, in agreement to the U.N. charter and international law, has an intrinsic right to punishment and will act decisively in this regard."

"We’ve told our friends that we are not seeking escalation in the region and we support altruistic efforts for establishing a cease-fire. Meanwhile, we emphasize our intrinsic right to punish the aggressor and establishing deterrence against a terrorist regime and will use this right at the appropriate time."

STORYLINE:
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said Monday that Iran will punish Israel "at the appropriate time" during international efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Iranian officials have vowed to retaliate following an explosion that killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Iran blames Israel for Haniyeh’s death.
Foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani, however, said Iran was not seeking escalation in the region and supported cease-fire talks that would return hostages held by Hamas and bring relief to Palestinian suffering after 10 months of devastating fighting in Gaza.
New talks are expected this week in Egypt.
The war began October 7 when Hamas-led militants broke into Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250. Of those, some 110 are still believed to be in Gaza, though Israeli authorities say around a third are dead. More than 100 hostages were released in November during a weeklong cease-fire.
