“China is resolute in advancing high-quality opening-up and reform. We are committed to providing Chinese and foreign companies with a market-orientated, law-based and internationalized business environment. As for the anti-espionage law you mentioned, it targets only a handful of espionage activities that endanger national security, not normal business activities. So, as long as the relevant companies and personnel can act in accordance with the law, there is nothing to worry about.”

“The Taiwan issue is China’s internal affairs. Opposing Taiwan independence is the key to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. China always opposes anyone undermining Chinese territorial sovereignty and security under the excuse of freedom of navigation.”

STORYLINE:
China on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to providing foreign business with a “market-oriented" and "law-based” environment after German pharma groups expressed concerns over the country’s anti-espionage law.

The German Medicines Manufacturers’ Association (BAH) recently said many of their inspectors refused to visit and inspect Chinese production sites over fears of arrest for spying under the law, according to media reports.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the law “targets only a handful of espionage activities that endanger national security, not normal business activities.”

Foreign business organizations and governments have been calling for greater clarity last year on what foreign firms are allowed to do under Beijing’s vaguely worded anti-espionage law.

Concerns include tighter restrictions on the transfer of data to other parties, and what data is considered related to national security under the law.

Mao also reasserted China’s claim over Taiwan when asked about Germany’s plan to sail two warships through the Taiwan Strait next month.

China has been considering the self-ruled island part of its territory and stepping up intimidation by flying fighter jets and conducting intensive drills surrounding the territory.
