"On August 19, two Philippine coast guard vessels, without permission of the Chinese government, intruded the adjacent waters of the Xianbin JIao (Sabina Shoal) of China’s Nansha Qundao (Spratly Islands). Despite dissuasion and warning by China’s coast guard, the vessels dangerously and deliberately collided Chinese coast guard vessels that was carrying out law enforcement operations. The responsibility for the collision fully lies in the Philippines. China coast guards took necessary measures on Philippines vessels according to domestic laws and international laws. The operation was professional, restrained and proper.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry:
"I want to stress that Xianbin Jiao (Sabina Shoal) is part of Nansha Qunda (Spratly Islands) and is an inherent territory of China without inhabitants. The Philippines sent coast guard vessels to intrude the waters and attempted to send supplies to the vessels stranded in the waters of Xianbin Jiao with the intention of a long-term stay. This seriously violated China’s territory and integrity, violated DOC (the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea), and seriously threatened the peace and stability of the South China Sea. China strongly opposes this and will take strong measures according to law to safeguard its territorial sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and the seriousness of the DOC.”

STORYLINE:
China on Monday blamed Philippine vessels for "dangerously and deliberately" colliding with a Chinese coast guard vessel earlier in the day in the disputed South China Sea.

The collision damaged at least two boats near Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Jiao in Chinese, a disputed atoll in the Spratly Islands, where overlapping climbs are also made by Vietnam and Taiwan.

There were no injuries reported.

Two Philippine coast guard ships entered waters near the shoal, ignored the Chinese coast guard’s warning and intentionally collided with one of China’s boats at 3:24 a.m., a spokesperson said in a statement on the Chinese coast guard’s website.

"The responsibility for the collision fully lies on the Philippines," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at Monday briefing.

The measures taken by Chinese coast guards were "professional, restrained and proper," she added.

The Philippines’ National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea said two of the coast guard’s ships, BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño, “encountered unlawful and aggressive manoeuvres” from Chinese coast guard vessels while en route to Patag and Lawak islands, which are occupied by Filipino forces, in the contested region.

Mao said the Philippine vessels attempted to send supplies to the vessels trapped in the waters.

"This seriously violated China’s territory and integrity, violated DOC (the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea), and seriously threatened the peace and stability of the South China Sea," she added.

China has been at odds with many other countries in the Asia-Pacific for years over its sweeping maritime claims, including almost all of the South China Sea, a strategic and resource-rich waterway.
