STORYLINE:
Vietnam’s new leader To Lam met with Chinese president Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday.
Lam made China the destination for his first overseas visit, signaling the importance the Southeast Asian country places on its giant neighbor even as it strengthens ties with the United States and others.
After a state welcoming ceremony hosted by Xi, the two leaders had official talks in which both reaffirmed the aspiration of building a community with a shared future between China and Vietnam.
“I would like to establish a good working relationship and personal friendship with you,” Xi told Lam.
He said China has always been regarding the relations with Vietnam as the priority of the neighboring diplomacy.
Lam echoed Xi’s proposal on closer ties between the two, saying he would like to continue the course of “traditional friendship and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership to build a shared future community for Vietnam and China” defined by Xi and late leader Nguyen Phu Trong.
Lam’s three-day visit comes about two weeks after he was confirmed as general secretary of Vietnam’s Communist Party, the country’s top political position.
He succeeded Nguyen Phu Trong, who died last month after 13 years as leader.
Lam also has held the largely ceremonial title of the nation’s president since May.
The two leaders also witnessed the signing of 14 agreement and memoranda of understanding between China and Vietnam, aiming to enhance cooperation in areas of industry, railway link, trade, finance, health and media.
