6. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Zdravko Lasic, shellfish farmer:
"This season we are confronted with a massive death of mussels, unprecedented. We can’t say for sure how and why it happened, but we are convinced that the high sea temperatures are what killed them. Prolonged high sea temperatures are probably what caused this massacre of mussels.”

16. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Zdravko Lasic, shellfish farmer:
“What is particularly concerning is that for the first time we find ourselves in the situation where the heat is killing all generations (of mussels), including the tiniest ones. Seed mussels used to always survive, but now, if the sea warming does not stop, if the sea does not cool down a bit, we worry that we won’t have enough seed mussels and that they won’t grow to marketable size for next year.”

28. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ana Bratos Cetinic, associate professor in the Department of Aquaculture of the Dubrovnik University:
“What is clear is that in the past two weeks the sea temperatures (in parts of Croatia) were well above the average values for this time of year. In parts of the Mali Ston bay, specifically in the Brijesta lagoon which is quite shallow, sea temperatures were very high.”

29. Exterior of the University of Dubrovnik main entrance
30. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ana Bratos Cetinic, associate professor in the Department of Aquaculture of the Dubrovnik University:
“Studies, including the most recent ones, have consistently shown that mussels are highly sensitive to heat and cannot survive water temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius for more than three days, which is likely what happened in the Mali Ston bay.”
