3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zainab Mehdi, farmer displaced from Naqoura:
"There are those whose homes were destroyed, and others who had loved ones killed: brothers, husbands, fathers, cousins—most of them lost relatives in the war. When they arrived here, their psychological state was very poor. When they come here, it’s like a little relief for them. But all of them are facing difficult circumstances; they were all affected by the war and have been struggling. But thank God, they are all strong, and hopefully, they will go back to their villages stronger, even stronger."

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sarah Saloum, supervisor of Seeds of Sour project by Agricultural Movement in Lebanon:
"The program targets 225 displaced women who are here with us. Part of the project is agricultural, part is the production of traditionally preserved foods, and another part is the production of seeds and seedlings in the agricultural tent here, so that the farmers can take them back to their villages to restore the soil damaged by the fires that occurred in their villages. So they can regrow and compensate for the trees that were burned by the white phosphorus that was dropped on those areas."

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zainab Mehdi, farmer displaced from Naqoura:
"When we go back, everything we learned here, we will apply it in the mountain, and bring back our lands to what they were and even better. We also want to teach others because not everyone is here. Not everyone has managed to come here. One of the women says, ‘I want to teach my neighbors. I want to teach my friends.’ They are saving a lot of things here because there, they used to buy things like fertilizers and other stuff, but now the costs are less. This is the most important thing for our land back in the mountains; the costs of the things we had to buy were so high. Now, when we grow on our land, we don’t find anything expensive. This was a good thing for the women to learn."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zainab Mehdi, farmer from Naqoura and farmer:
"We feel very good when we come to the farm. No matter how many worries you have outside the farm—problems, oppression, or a loved one killed—when you come to the farm and you see the crops, the trees and the soil, your mental state relaxes so much. It’s like a weight lifted off your shoulders once you come here. You forget the entire world when you step in, and you see these crops that you grew yourself and worked hard on producing. Soon, we will start to produce with this project. When the women first walk in during the morning, they say, ‘Ah, bliss, when we step in, we feel so relaxed.’"

STORYLINE:
Farming and tending to the land were what Zainab Mehdi and many women in southern Lebanon used to do for a living.

But over the past ten months, as Israel and Hezbollah began exchanging fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border, they had to pack their belongings and move to safety..

In the coastal city of Tyre, a project called Seeds of Sour, funded by UN Women, is giving these women a chance to continue their livelihood while also learning new skills.

The project is helping over 200 female farmers from villages hit by Israeli shelling and strikes.

She and her family, like thousands of others, moved to Tyre.
