"During my time at Parkview the mix of patients on the ward was quite varied. So we had some young people who are doing really well, like myself. And there were some young people who were just starting their journey in inpatient and were really struggling with their mental health. They might have been headbanging or screaming or trying to get out the doors and were really unsettled."

"It would have been nice to have a separate setting where I could have escaped and just hung out, chilled, somewhere else that wasn’t the ward, that wasn’t so chaotic. It would have been nice to have a space like this where I could just sit in nature. And it was like a whole different world, this is a whole different world, this outdoor space compared to the unit. You can’t even hear the noises from the unit or you can’t even see the unit if you go quite deep into the forest. But it would have been super helpful and super therapeutic to kind of be in a different setting."

17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Zeze Sohawon, former patient at Parkview
"I think being in a nature-filled environment has a really big impact on my mental health. So I had an illness called psychosis. And with that, I struggled to know what was real and what wasn’t. And so actually being out in nature is a real grounder for me. So I ground myself in nature. And there was something a doctor once told me that when you feel like you’re not real, go out into nature and just take your shoes off and feel the soil between your toes and feel the leaves. And just focus on what you can feel and that will show you that you are real."

23. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dan O’Mara, head of nursing, Parkview
"I’ve spoken to a parent who had to travel quite a distance to get to see her daughter and having spoken to her daughter over the phone and by text on numerous occasions during the admission, she heard about some of the stresses that happen in a unit like ours. And so having the opportunity to be in the outdoors, in this natural space, with her daughter allowed them both to feel more connected with what life is like at home and to be able to enjoy the visit together in a way that I think they probably couldn’t have done so before."
