"The Egyptian effort will not stop, regardless of the obstacles and problems. The effort will continue, because as I mentioned, we are a major regional country and a party concerned with stability, and we will not allow any party to drag the region into a destructive war from which no one will be spared and from which no party will emerge a winner. Therefore, this effort will continue."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Badr Abdelatty, Egyptian Foreign Minister:
"This paper is now the important reference paper (the paper submitted yesterday by the mediators US, Qatar and Egypt to Israel and Hamas). There is communication between the Israeli and Palestinian sides, and if the intentions are sincere and if there is political will, then certainly a cease-fire can be reached. There are some gaps and loopholes, but they are being dealt with and ideas on how to break these gaps are being explored."

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Stephane Sejourne, French Foreign Minister:
“My second message, your Excellency the Minister, is that we must together avoid any regional escalation in any form, because the results of such an escalation will be disastrous for the region, and we call on all parties to exercise self-restraint and put an end to the logic of response and counter response that result in civilians being the first victims. That’s the message we’ve been reiterating.”

STORYLINE:
French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne met with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty in Cairo on Saturday as part of an increased wave of diplomacy aimed at securing the deal between Israel and Hamas and to reduce tensions in the region.
Sejourne arrived in Cairo on the last leg of his regional tour that included Tel Aviv, the Palestinian Territories and Beirut.
The Egyptian capital is set to host the next round of talks between Israel and Hamas, building on the recent talks in Doha that mediators saw as positive.
“In Cairo, my regional tour ends after Beirut, Tel Aviv and the Palestinian territories. At each stage, I had discussions about the necessity of a cease-fire, putting an end to the suffering of the people in Gaza and releasing the hostages, including two Frenchmen,” Sejourne said after talks with Abdelatty.
The top Egyptian diplomat, for his part, expressed optimism that “if the intentions are sincere and if there is political will, then certainly a cease-fire can be reached.”
“There are some gaps and loopholes, but they are being dealt with and ideas on how to break these gaps are being explored," he added.
An American official said Friday that the cease-fire deal presented to the two sides bridges all the gaps between Israel and Hamas.
