STORYLINE:
Thousands of Yemeni demonstrators took to the streets of the capital Sanaa following Friday prayers to express their support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as the Israel-Hamas war continues.
The Houthi rebels have been organising protests nearly every Friday since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas last October.
The demonstration comes at a volatile moment, as fears are high of an escalation into a wider regional war, with Iran vowing revenge against Israel over former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s killing, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah threatening to retaliate over Israel’s killing of one of its top commanders in an airstrike in Beirut two weeks ago.
This along with Gaza health authorities saying that the death toll in the region has climbed past 40,000, has prompted a new push for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.
To prevent the war in Gaza from spreading into a wider regional conflict, international diplomacy intensified Friday, with the British and French foreign ministers making a joint trip to Israel while internationally mediated cease-fire talks in Qatar were expected to enter their second day.
International mediators believe the best hope for calming tensions would be a deal between Israel and Hamas to halt the fighting and secure the release of Israeli hostages.
