The first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago featured several high-profile speeches, including by President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. Yet Hillary Clinton’s speech was undoubtedly the most consequential speech for her supporters, and an object of critique for her detractors who either wanted Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic Party’s nominee in 2016, or who chose to vote for former President Trump instead. Clinton spoke of the proverbial glass ceiling that women have to contend with when seeking to occupy positions of power, a ceiling that is still very much in place in the White House. In 2016, Clinton herself famously ran to break through that barrier, but lost the election to Donald Trump, despite winning the popular vote by nearly 2.9 million.
