9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Badr Abdelaty, Egyptian Foreign Minister:
“The cessation of the aggression against the Gaza Strip by stopping the killing of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, of women, children and innocent civilians, this is the origin of the problem and the main source of tension and escalation in the region. Therefore, Egypt, in cooperation with its sister Qatar and in cooperation with the United States, is making huge efforts to quickly reach a deal that will lead to an immediate cease-fire, a cessation of killing civilians and an exchange of prisoners and hostages. This is the key to the beginning of a solution in this region, the beginning of de-escalation and the beginning of preventing the region from sliding into all-out war.“

STORYLINE:
The Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaty held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bouhabib in Beirut on Friday, as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent an escalation of violence in the Middle East
In a joint news conference after the meeting, Abdelaty was asked what will be Egypt’s position if Israel insists on staying on Philadelphi corridor
“There are applicable rules, and we will not accept that these rules will be changed on the ground, and we will continue to cling to our stance," Abdelaty said.
Last May, Israel’s military said it seized control of the strategic Philadelphi corridor along Gaza’s border with Egypt to cut off smuggling tunnels as it tries to destroy Hamas.
"All what we are seeking is to quickly reach a deal that leads to a ceasefire and a prisoner and hostages exchange," he added.
Abdelaty’s comments in Beirut came as officials from Egypt, Qatar, Israel and the US held talks in Doha, in an attempt to end the war raging in Gaza since early October.
The diplomat added that Egypt, Qatar and the US are working to close the gaps by suggesting solutions.
He said that the three countries are “making huge efforts to quickly reach a deal that will lead to an immediate cease-fire, a cessation of killing civilians and an exchange of prisoners and hostages."
"This is the key to the beginning of a solution in this region, the beginning of de-escalation and the beginning of preventing the region from sliding into all-out war,“ Abdelaty said.
Tension has been rising in the Middle East following the killing of a top military official with the militant Hezbollah group in Beirut and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.
Iran and Hezbollah blamed Israel and have vowed to retaliate.
Hezbollah and its allies in the region, mainly Houthi rebels in Yemen, have said that they will stop carrying out attacks against Israel once Israel stops its offensive in Gaza.
