2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Foster, Public Astronomy Officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich:
"Well, a supermoon is really the coinciding of two different celestial events. First of all, it’s when the moon is at its closest to the Earth because as it orbits around us, sometimes it is closer, sometimes it’s further away. And when that coincides with it being a full moon, that is a supermoon. So it’s usually 7% bigger in the sky and about 15% brighter as well."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Foster, Public Astronomy Officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich:
"Well, luckily it is the biggest, brightest moon you can get, so it could not be easier. If you have a clear view of the southern horizon, that helps. But the moon’s going to be rising at 9 p.m (2000 GMT)., it’s going to be getting higher and further west as night progresses, and it’s going to be up all night long. So really, you don’t need any equipment at all. It’s big and it’s bright. It’s beautiful. But if you do have a pair of binoculars or a telescope, it can help you to point out some of those beautiful features on the surface."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Foster, Public Astronomy Officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich:
"Well, actually, it’s it’s quite a good time to see Saturn. It’s actually really close by to the moon, just slightly higher and off to the left following the moon as the evening progresses. So it’ll be a bright white dot near the moon. And through a small telescope, you might even be able to see its rings as well."

The first of four supermoons this year rises next week promising dazzling views of Earth’s constant companion.

Stargazers can catch the first act on Monday as the full moon inches a little closer than usual, making it appear slightly bigger and brighter in the night sky.

STORYLINE

This is what lucky stargazers should see next week if the conditions are right.

A big, bright supermoon.

"A supermoon is really the coinciding of two different celestial events," explains Jake Foster, Public Astronomy Officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

"First of all, it’s when the moon is at its closest to the Earth because as it orbits around us, sometimes it is closer, sometimes it’s further away. And when that coincides with it being a full moon, that is a supermoon," he adds.

A supermoon obviously isn’t bigger, but it can appear that way.

According to Foster, they usually seem 7% bigger and about 15% brighter.

He says observing supermoons is a great way to get into astronomy as no special equipment is needed.

There’s a quartet of supermoons this year.
