"Scott was the geography teacher and cross-country coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. He’s hailed a hero because he saved 31 of his students. And when he went to close the door behind him, he got shot, and he was murdered. The reason the fund was started was because of Scott’s love for camp."

"So if I make a connection this week, it may very well be with someone that I will see in Publix two weeks later. And so that relationship expands into the community. They’re going to tell their friends, oh yeah, he’s cool, we can talk to him. So if there’s something they need to report, if they are having trouble in their community or at their school, they’re more likely to go to law enforcement for help because they’ve had that experience here at camp and know, okay, they’re not all what I think they are."

"I know that the memorial fund funds it and sends, you know, gives grants so that they can come. But selfishly, I get to be part of it, too. And as much as it’s hard to beg for, you know, beg for donations, this is what it’s all about. And this makes it all worth it. It makes everything we do during the year worthwhile."

STORYLINE:
The mom of a teacher murdered during the 2018 high school massacre in Parkland, Florida, is finishing another summer of sending kids to camp in her son’s honor.
Linda Beigel Schulman runs the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund.
She and her volunteers raised over $300,000 this year to send 264 children to camp and pay for their transportation.
Scott Beigel was fatally shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after herding 31 students to safety in his classroom. He was 35.
