STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip say they hope the latest round of cease-fire talks will bring an end to the devastating Israel-Hamas war.
Qatar is hosting a new round of talks Thursday with fellow mediators the United States and Egypt, as well as an Israeli delegation.
Hamas is not directly participating but has senior officials who reside in Qatar.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, now in its 11th month, has killed over 40,000 Palestinians in the besieged territory, according to local health authorities, and caused widespread destruction.
The war began when Hamas launched an attack into Israel on Oct. 7, in which militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250.
"Oh Lord, we hope they will agree and this will end, because the population has been annihilated completely," Abu Nidal Eweini told The Associated Press in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah.
"People have no energy left; They are exhausted," he added.
Riyad Hasan, who was displaced from Gaza City, said people want to return to their homes.
The vast majority of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people have been displaced, often multiple times, and hundreds of thousands are living in squalid tent camps.
“We are people who want to live,” he said.
“Let them accept the deal and end this. Find a solution for us,” Hasan added.
Amna Abu Hajaier, who is living in a tent, said one of her sons was killed and another is missing.
“We have suffered a lot,” she said.
We hope that someone will stand with us, support us and care for us a little. The Palestinian people are destroyed," Hajaier added.
