"Well we were just beginning to set money aside for our elderly sisters and to care for our own retirement. Up to that point, we really did not have any investments. And as we started to do that, we decided it was really important to do it in a responsible way."

"Making sure that our investments are invested in companies that we believe in, and support. And if they don’t, we might have a small amount invested in other companies. Like some years ago, we withdrew from fossil fuels. However, we said, let’s keep a small amount so we can file shareholder resolutions in those companies."

"It works to build a world in which corporate policies and practices reflect a just and equitable distribution of resources for the common good. It’s kind of like spreading the money around. You know, there’s too many rich people. And way too. Yeah, too many rich people and way too many poor people. Both. And it needs to be spread around a heck of a lot more."

"To me, it’s again, it’s just how do we try and structure our life? Our lifestyle, living according to the gospel. And it’s going to intersect with politics and economics. Both. It’s just, you know, the nature of, being an active citizen. And we’re just trying to be good citizens."

STORYLINE:
The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, who in recent months gained notoriety for denouncing the graduation speech given by the Kansas City Chiefs kicker, are no strangers to social justice and voicing their beliefs.

For the past two decades the sisters have engaged in activist investing. Meaning they invest what little money they have into corporations that match their moral and religious ideals, but also into those who don’t in order to change what they say are the harmful policies of large corporations.
