STORYLINE:
Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara visited the Yasukuni Shrine Thursday marking the 79th anniversary of the country’s surrender during World War II.
Kihara told the media that he was visiting as an individual to pay his respects and offer condolences to those who lost their lives during the war.
When asked about impact of this visit on the relations with South Korea, Kihara said he will keep on working to strengthen the relationship.
Victims of Japanese aggression, especially China and the Koreas, see the shrine as a symbol of Japanese militarism because it honors convicted war criminals among about 2.5 million war dead.
