RAJ: " Actually no comments on this since it is a political issue."
REPORTER: "Why?"
RAJ: " No comments. I actually didn’t, form a like, I’m not following that so closely. So that’s the reason."
REPORTER: "Okay. Will it inform your choice about sending your kids here?"
RAJ: "No, I don’t think so."
REPORTER: "Why not?"
RAJ: "Because presidents come and go, right? The institution stays forever. So it doesn’t have to define an institution by person."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Allison Murdoch, 2016 Barnard College Alumnus:
"I honestly thought that it was the right move. I think that Columbia has a history of having on campus protests. And in my experience as a student, the the actions of the students in the 1970s with the protests against the Vietnam War were largely celebrated by the administration and by professors that I had. So I felt that there was a little bit of hypocrisy between what was taught to the students about their right to sort of speak for what they believed in, their right to protest, and the actual actions that the administration took. So I thought that the president made the right move in leaving, and I’m hoping that the new president who replaces her is someone who is more focused on allowing students to have a voice and giving them a platform to make their beliefs heard."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Allison Murdoch, 2016 Barnard College Alumnus:
"I think it probably should have happened sooner. Yes. But I think probably other university presidents who had left had set a precedent. That made it seem like a more opportune time to leave. I do think it should have happened sooner, but better late than never."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Allison Murdoch, 2016 Barnard College Alumnus:
"But I hope that whoever they choose as a replacement is someone whose background is more oriented around social justice, sort of a civil rights, and someone whose history is just more in line with the sort of sentiment of the Columbia student community, and less so someone whose background is more corporate or from other for profit organizations. So hopefully they’ll go more in that direction."

STORYLINE:
Columbia University President Minouche Shafik resigned Wednesday after a brief, tumultuous tenure that saw the head of the prestigious New York university face heavy scrutiny for her handling of protests and campus divisions over the Israel-Hamas war.
The Ivy League school in upper Manhattan was roiled this year by student demonstrations, culminating in scenes of police officers carrying zip ties and riot shields storming a building that had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters. Similar protests swept college campuses nationwide, with many leading to violent clashes with police and thousands of arrests.
The announcement also comes just days after the school confirmed that three deans had resigned after officials said they exchanged disparaging texts during a campus discussion about Jewish life and antisemitism.
