STORYLINE:
A Russian rocket strike hit a school in the Ukrainian region of Sumy on August 8, days after Kyiv launched its incursion into Russia.

Serhii Zaichenko, a guard at the school, said the strike killed two brothers, one of whom was six years old.

"Other people who were in the house survived, thank God," Zaichenko said.

"The wall is thick, about 75 centimeters, so it saved those three women who were working there. But not the two brothers. One, Dima, was 6 years-old, his brother Bogdan was 22 or 23.”

Ukrainian forces pushed on with their major cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region for a second week Wednesday, claiming to have taken more ground, captured more Russian prisoners and destroyed a jet bomber while launching what officials said was a massive attack on Russian military airfields.

The Russian Defense Ministry said army units, fresh reserves, army aircraft, drone teams and artillery forces had stopped Ukrainian armored mobile groups from moving deeper into Russia.

A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said the cross-border operation was aimed at protecting Ukrainian land from long-range strikes launched from Kursk.

He said that Ukraine isn’t interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region.
