STORYLINE:
Only a few minutes after entering the courtroom, Wander Franco and his lawyers walked out as the trial had been postponed until the 26th of September.
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco arrived at the court in the province of Puerto Plata, on Wednesday to the start of a preliminary trial after being charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic.
According to Dignora Diloné, the lawyer representing the father of the minor, the trial was delayed because the defense was not notified of the existence of a hard drive containing information relevant to the case that was going to be presented at the trial.
The baseball player and his lawyers did not speak to the media outside the courtroom.
Prosecutors filed multiple charges against Franco six months after a judge ordered that he be investigated in connection with sexual and psychological abuse of the girl.
The indictment also includes the girl’s mother. According to prosecutors, Franco paid the girl’s mother thousands of dollars to consent to the abuse, which lasted four months. The girl’s mother remains under house arrest and faces a money laundering charge.
The AP is not identifying the woman to preserve her daughter’s privacy.
