STORYLINE:
Fireworks brightened the skies of Karachi on Tuesday night as thousands gathered to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Musicians performed on stage with many in the crowd singing and dancing.

"We should think about what our contribution for our country is. If we pay attention to that, we can progress”, Aleena Shafaat, a Karachi resident said.

However some residents noted a lack of enthusiasm for festivities amid economic hardship in the country.

“The fervor that we used to see is absent this time perhaps because of inflation. I have a well-paying jo, but still I did not spend money on buying flags and decorating the house”, Mani Chao, a Karachi resident, said.

Pakistan last year narrowly avoided a default on the payment of foreign debts when International Monetary Fund and several friendly nations came to its rescue by giving it loans.

Pakistan’s monthly inflation rate at one point reached over 40%, but authorities say it had come down to 17% ahead of the talks with IMF for a new bailout.

“The whole city is devoid of the fervor of the Independence Day. There used to be stalls in every neighborhood in the past but not this time. Only when I came here did I see some excitement of the Independence Day", said Nauman Ali, another Karachi resident.
