“Look at this corn. Today is what 10th or 12th of August? Anyway, we are at the end of the first decade of August and corn should have been much greener than this until at least the first ten days of September. So we have the statistics and we have (visual) proof of climate change. Huge accumulation of heat energy and excessive evaporation rates already had a huge impact on the (Bosnia’s) agriculture sector.”

“This is an obvious example of how heat affects crops during reproductive stages. Temperatures above 34 degrees Celsius make the pollen unviable, while temperatures between 30 and 34 degrees Celsius result in reduced yields. This ear shows the extent of damage.“

“To summarize, temperatures are constantly increasing and we have a serious disturbance in rainfall patterns. What is happening now in Central Europe is similar to what happened in central Spain. We have long stretches of hot, dry weather and short spells of intense rainfall. The climate is changing; we already have episodes of extreme weather which are likely to become more frequent in the future.”

“I have 40 hectares of land under corn, wheat, barley and oats. I yielded some small cereals this year, but as far as corn is concerned, you can see it behind me. It is ready for picking this early in August and we will soon have to start harvesting it.”

“In recent years, we have been confronting increasingly long heat waves and that affects our agriculture sector, primarily our corn farmers. Corn is grown on between 25 and 26 thousand hectares, or about a half of all cultivated land around Bijeljina. There is no doubt that heat waves will have a negative impact on quality and quantity of our corn yield.”
